BEIJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese mainland semiconductor company UNISOC has, for the first time, strode into the top five vendors in the domestic smartphone System-on-a-Chip (SoC) market, according to a communications industry report.

The company shipped 800,000 units of SoCs in May, 63 times the figure from the same period last year, showed data from the report jointly published by research and consulting company CINNO and the National Business Daily.

As domestic smartphone brands, such as Honor, started to use UNISOC chips, more domestic phone companies followed, said the report.

MediaTek, a Taiwan-based semiconductor manufacturer, continues to expand in the Chinese mainland market, with its shipments jumping 51.9 percent year on year to reach 8.7 million units in May, the data showed.

Qualcomm follows close behind with its shipments standing at 7.7 million units, while Apple comes in third with 3.4 million units.

Hisilicon, a wholly owned subsidiary of Huawei, shipped 2.4 million units of SoCs in May, down 76 percent year on year.

Samsung has been knocked out of the top five in China's smartphone SoC market in May, said the report. Enditem
