Singaporean scholar urges U.S.-China cooperation for reviving global economy amid pandemic

May 14, 2021

Abstract : A renowned Singaporean scholar on Thursday called on the United States to stop its geopolitical contest against China and said the only way to jumpstart the global economy reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic is cooperation between the world's two largest economies.

HONG KONG, May 13 (Xinhua) -- A renowned Singaporean scholar on Thursday called on the United States to stop its geopolitical contest against China and said the only way to jumpstart the global economy reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic is cooperation between the world's two largest economies.

During an online forum organized by think tank Our Hong Kong Foundation (OHKF), Kishore Mahbubani, a distinguished fellow at the Asia Research Institute of the National University of Singapore, said U.S. President Joe Biden's administration should end the trade war with China initiated by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

The United States should eliminate the additional tariffs on Chinese products slapped by the Trump administration, and reverse its China policy, he said.

If the U.S.-China geopolitical contest continues, the whole world will be affected, Mahbubani said.

Calling the U.S. trade war against China a failure, Mahbubani believes the United States neither solved its domestic economic concerns nor contained China's development, only hurting its own interests and greatly worsening the bilateral relations.

"The trade tariffs have hurt American consumers, hurt American workers and hurt the American economy," he said.

Asian countries should call on the United States and China to cooperate and jointly deal with pressing problems from the COVID-19 pandemic to climate change and economic recession, said Mahbubani, who used to serve as Singapore's Ambassador to the United Nations.

OHKF is a non-government, non-profit organization founded in November 2014 under the chairmanship of Tung Chee-hwa, who is vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Enditem
