BEIJING, May 6 (Xinhua) -- The eastern Chinese city of Shanghai received overall 16.89 million tourists during the five-day May Day holiday that ended Wednesday, which surged 138.88 percent from the same period of last year, the Xinhua-run Shanghai Securities Journal reported on Wednesday.
According to the local authorities, the city saw the number of inter-provincial tourists amount to 6.25 million during the period, accounting for 37 percent of the total.
Driven by people's strong tourism demand, the city's consumption market gained momentum during the May Day holiday.
Data showed that tourists contributed about 40 billion yuan to the city's holiday consumption.
The average room occupancy rate of hotels in Shanghai stood at 71 percent, which was 45 percentage points and 15 percentage points higher than the same period of 2020 and 2019, respectively. (Edited by Yang Yifan with Xinhua Silk Road, yangyifan@xinhua.org)
