BEIJING, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese authorities are poised to launch a campaign to inspect the de-capacity in the steel sector this year nationwide in an effort to promote high-quality development of the sector, according to the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) on Monday.
The NDRC, China's top economic planner, and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) will jointly carry out the inspection, guiding the steel enterprises to abandon the extensive development method and target the high-quality development.
The authorities will especially focus on the shutdown and withdrawal of smelting facilities for the substandard steel products in the regions since 2016, and inspect the de-capacity results.
The campaign aims to achieve a year-on-year decline in the national crude steel output this year, said the NDRC.
In 2020, the country's crude steel output rose 5.2 percent year on year to exceed 1.05 billion metric tons (tonnes), according to the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA). (Edited by Hu Pingchao with Xinhua Silk Road, hupingchao@xinhua.org)
