BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd, a joint venture between China and Brunei, launched on Wednesday its Clean Beach Initiative as part of its long-term Corporate Social Responsibility in preserving the local environment towards a sustainable future.
As part of the initiative, Hengyi installed two signages and six recycle bins at Muara Recreational Beach, and two recycle bins at Serasa Beach as a reminder to the public to help keep the beach clean and to adopt a greener lifestyle. Hengyi will also be engaging a third-party cleaning company to ensure that the recycle bins are maintained and cleaned out regularly.
The petrochemical company also organized a beach clean-up activity where over 100 Hengyi staff and volunteers cleaned up litters and debris at Muara Recreational Beach.
Hengyi Industries is a joint venture between China's Zheijiang Hengyi Group and Damai Holdings, a wholly-owned subsidiary under Brunei government's Strategic Development Capital Fund.
Dayang Martinah, acting director of the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation at the Ministry of Development, said at the event that Hengyi's Clean Beach Initiative is in line with Brunei government's efforts to minimize and reduce waste generation and disposal as well as to increase the recycling rate to achieve the target of 30 percent by 2035.
"I believe this is a good platform to encourage the public, especially beach-goers to practice segregating their recyclable and non-recyclable wastes, inculcating green and sustainable habits, and making sure that wastes are binned properly to prevent them from entering the oceans, or as we now term it, 'marine debris'", she said.
She added that Hengyi's environmental protection efforts "is a good starting point to raise awareness on how the public can contribute and play their role in keeping the environment clean, as cleanliness is everyone's responsibility." Enditem
