The incoming president of the Federation of German Industries (BDI), Siegfried Russwurm, has said he wants to work to ensure that German companies maintain "their global leadership position" in the age of digitalization. "The structural change in German industry, which has been exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic, is profound," said Russwurm, who was elected to head the BDI at its general assembly in Berlin on Monday. "Only a strong and internationally competitive industry will ensure Germany's future viability," he said.
At the turn of the year, the 57-year-old former Siemens manager will succeed Dieter Kempf, who has been at the helm of the BDI since the beginning of 2017. Kempf will become vice president of the federation after his term of office expires in accordance with the organization's statutes. The BDI is the umbrella group for 40 associations from various sectors and sees itself as the mouthpiece for around 100,000 industrial companies with over eight million employees.
Russwurm is chairman of the supervisory boards of the industrial companies ThyssenKrupp and Voith. In his former position as Chief Human Resources Officer and Industrial Relations Director of Siemens, he was a member of the executive committee of the Federation of German Employers' Associations (BDA) from 2008 to 2010.
