BEIJING, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- To accelerate the construction of new information infrastructure is on top priority for the foundamental development of digital economy, said Ke Ruiwen, chairman of the country's major telecom carrier China Telecom, at a conference held on Monday.
Ke noted that new information infrastructure construction is an important strategic resource that supports the development of digital economy and determines the height, breadth and depth of its development.
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought severe impact to the world economy. However, there have been new opportunities in the crisis. Digital economy has showed great potential and broad prospects, said Ke.
Statistics showed that global gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to fall about 4.4 percent year on year in 2020, while digital economy will grow by 0.5 percent on year. China's GDP expanded 0.7 percent on year in the first three quarters, which can be mainly attributed to the contribution of digital economy.
Ke said that the essential of new information infrastructure is cloud-network integration. In recent years, China Telecom has accelerated cloud-network integration, and facilitated 5G development through standard promotion, industry promotion and commercial deployment.
In the meanwhile, building new information infrastructure calls for new development concept. China Telecom and China Unicom announced previously they will work together to build and share 5G network infrastructure, which can help them reduce construction costs and improve development efficiency.
Efforts should also be made to empower industries, enhance cooperation and build a sound environment for the development of digital economy, according to Ke.
New problems related to technological security, industrial security, data security and personal information security are challenges that we should face together, added Ke. (Edited by Zhang Yuan with Xinhua Silk Road, zhangyuan11@xinhua.org)
