BEIJING, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- The 2020 China Biotech Innovation Conference commenced on Tuesday in Suzhou, east China's Jiangsu Province, attracting more than 30 academicians and 300 experts, as well as over 2,000 guests to discuss cooperation and innovation in biotechnology industry.
Xu Nanping, Vice Minister of Science and Technology, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony, saying that the scientific and technological innovation of biotechnology should take the protection of people's lives and health as the core and support the overall improvement of people's quality of life.
Zhong Nanshan, the academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said in a video speech that China's biotechnology innovation and development has improved in recent years, but still faces shortcomings in talents, independent intellectual property rights, and industrialization capabilities.
Zhong Nanshan added that priorities should be given to the introduction and training of high-end talents, expanding international technological cooperation, and strengthening the construction of scientific research platforms and bases guided by national strategic goals.
Suzhou has gathered nearly 3,000 biomedical enterprises with about 50,000 employees in the industry by far. The city witnessed the biomedical sector's revenue amounting to 170 billion yuan in 2019 and was selected into the national strategic emerging industrial cluster.
Considering the promising prospects of biomedical development in Suzhou, the city vows to introduce massive new products, new projects, new technologies and new platforms to facilitate biomedical development, said Xu Kunlin, the party chief of Suzhou.
At the conference, a competitiveness evaluation and analysis report on China's biomedical industrial parks in 2020 was released by China National Center for Biotechnology Development, showing major indicators of biomedical industry in Suzhou Industrial Park rank among the top nationwide.
Co-hosted by the China National Center for Biotechnology Development and the Suzhou Municipal People's Government, this conference aims to promote exchanges, cooperation, integration and innovation in the biotechnology industry.
