BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- With the improvement of 5G network and the release of relevant plans, digital economy is thriving across China, and it is becoming a new engine for China's high-quality economic growth, reported Shanghai Securities News Monday.

According to a report by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), the added value of China's digital economy hit 35.8 trillion yuan in 2019, accounting for 36.2 percent of the country's GDP that year.

After the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic this year, local governments in China have eyed the power of digital economy in boosting imports and exports, driving domestic demands and aiding the manufacturing upgrading.

East China's Zhejiang Province took the lead in holding online exhibitions to serve foreign trade firms and overseas buyers by using big data, mobile internet, social communities and other digital solutions.

The Department of Commerce of Zhejiang Province estimates that online trade fairs may promote Zhejiang to acquire around 15 billion U.S. dollars of various orders throughout the year.

During the eight-day National Day holiday this year, southwest China's Guizhou Province, the first national big data comprehensive pilot zone of China, promoted the sales of goods through live stream, digital light shows and other activities.

Data of 13 key retail and catering companies monitored by the province show that the average daily customer flow from October 1 to October 7 increased by 16.4 percent year on year.

Central China's Hunan Province has accelerated the development of intelligent manufacturing, making breakthroughs in construction machinery, rail transit, automobiles, electrical appliances, electronic information, food and medicine, new materials and other key fields, according to Cao Huiquan, director of the Industry and Information Technology Department of Hunan Province.

With the improvement of the 5G network, China's environment for the development of digital economy has been further optimized.

As China unfolds the new infrastructure blueprint this year, 5G has become not only an effective means to expand investment, boost consumption and stabilize economic growth amid the epidemic, but also a key measure to support the digital transformation of the industry and the foundation for the development of digital economy, said Zhang Xuezhi, deputy director of the information and communication development arm with China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

The development of new technologies like 5G, artificial intelligence, industrial internet and Internet of Things (IoT) has created more possibilities for digital economy, noted Jiang Xiaojuan, dean of the School of Public Policy and Management, Tsinghua University.

She added that efforts should be made to guide and support digital infrastructure construction and original innovation research and development, and meanwhile to provide more application scenarios for digital economy to improve public services.
