BEIJING, Oct.10 (Xinhua) -- China's tech giant Huawei on Friday held an inauguration ceremony for the opening of a new R&D center in Paris.
Focusing on mathematics and computing and named after the well-known mathematician Joseph-Louis Lagrange, the Lagrange Center is the company's sixth R&D center in France.
Huawei has worked closely with many mathematicians to achieve major innovations, said Xu Wenwei, Director of Huawei and President of its Institute of Strategic Research in a video address, stressing that mathematics has played a key role in the development of communication industry in the past 30 years.
Lagrange Center is a platform open to all mathematicians worldwide. In the future, its research results will serve the entire communication industry, Xu said.
"We want to help push the boundaries of science in this field and prepare the breakthrough innovations of tomorrow," said Merouane Debbah, director of the R&D Center of Huawei France.
Ultimately, Lagrange Center aims to become an independent foundation headed by a scientific council, said Debbah.
Huawei announced a 1.5 billion euro investment plan back in 2013 in France. Previously, Huawei had set up five R&D centers in France in the fields of chip, mathematics, home terminal, aesthetics, sensor and software development, and its research results have been applied worldwide.(Edited by Yan Yulan, Niu Huizhe with Xinhua Silk Road, niuhuizhe@xinhua.org)
