BMW has awarded a major contract expanding the field of its suppliers of battery cells.
The Munich-based carmaker said Thursday that starting in 2024 the Swedish firm Northvolt is to deliver cells worth two billion euros. The cells are to be produced in a factory now under construction in Skelleftea in northern Sweden. The electricity for the plant is to be supplied completely with regional hydroelectric and wind power. BMW did not disclose the length of the contract.
"In Northvolt we have won a third battery cell supplier alongside our previous partners CATL and Samsung SDI," chief of purchasing Andreas Wendt said. "The contract is a further step towards the long-term securing of our rising need for battery cells."
BMW manufactures the batteries for its electric cars itself, but the Munich firm purchases the cells from other suppliers. Northvolt is also in business with the Volkswagen concern. The Swedish firm and VW are now building a battery cell factory in the German city of Salzgitter, not far from VW's headquarters in Wolfsburg.
