Automated trains are to be tested in the western German state of Lower Saxony from 2021 onwards. The French train manufacturer Alstom announced on Wednesday that the three-year research project is being organized in cooperation with the Regional Association of the greater area of Braunschweig, the German Aerospace Center and the Technical University of Berlin.
"In the future, automated trains will optimize regional rail operations, reduce energy consumption and increase ride comfort," said Jörg Nikutta, Managing Director of Alstom in Germany and Austria. Germany’s Ministry of Economics has awarded the planed project with the Innovation Prize for Regulatory Sandboxes. The project will see the regional trains equipped with the technology for highly automated driving. Regular passenger service on the railway lines between Wolfsburg and Braunschweig is planned for later. A train driver will be present on the train and monitor operations.
