SW. China's Sichuan strives to revitalize tea industry

May 27, 2020

Abstract : Southwest China's Sichuan Province has recently issued a plan to promote the revitalization of its tea industry.

BEIJING, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Southwest China's Sichuan Province has recently issued a plan to promote the revitalization of its tea industry.

According to the plan, Sichuan will designate 30 advantageous tea producing counties to build a famous green tea industrial belt in southwest Sichuan, a high-quality selenium enriched tea industrial belt in northeast Sichuan, two concentrated development zones for jasmine tea and Sichuan Gongfu black tea, and create a modern and specialized tea processing area with green tea as the main product and Gongfu black tea, jasmine tea and Tibetan tea as subsidiary products.

Meanwhile, Sichuan will launch major projects including building 50 provincial-level modern agricultural (tea industry) parks, cultivating five large-scale leading tea processing enterprises with sales revenue from one billion to five billion yuan, promoting the exports of Sichuan's tea and launching 30 tea-themed scenic spots.

By 2022, the province's tea plantation area will reach 6 million mu (about 400,000 hectares) , with an annual output of 350,000 tons and the comprehensive output value exceeding 100 billion yuan.

Data show that Sichuan had a total tea plantation area of 5.75 million mu (about 383,333 hectares) in 2019, with a raw tea output value of 27.9 billion yuan. (Edited by Gao Jingyan with Xinhua Silk Road, gaojingyan@xinhua.org)
