BEIJING, May 8 (Xinhua) -- A total of nearly 10 billion yuan will be invested in 5G construction this year in China's economic center Shanghai, according to an official with Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization on Thursday.
Shanghai plans to build 12,000 outdoor 5G base stations and 32,000 small indoor stations in 2020, almost covering the central urban areas and suburban urban areas with the average download speed surpassing 200Mb, said Zhang Jianming, vice chairman of Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization.
At the same time, Shanghai will accelerate the construction of the 5G standalone (SA) network, which can show the low latency and large capacity of 5G, enabling the development of industrial Internet and artificial intelligence (AI).
As a hotspot of the "new network", 5G is a key digital infrastructure which supports to build a digital, intelligent and networking economy and society, said Zhang.
Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization also sorted out more than 70 projects with clear implementation plan and nearly 20 reserve projects with investment intention and preliminary plan before 2023 in construction of digital infrastructure such as 5G network, industrial Internet and the Internet of things, to support to build a digital economy and next-generation information infrastructure.
By the end of the first quarter, more than 18,000 5G outdoor base stations and indoor small stations have been built. (Edited by Gao Jingyan with Xinhua Silk Road, gaojingyan@xinhua.org)
