BEIJING, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Kunming, the capital city of Southwest China's Yunnan Province, will build 5,000 5G base stations this year and have 5G network coverage for all its counties during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), Yunnan Daily reported on Wednesday citing local authorities.
In 2019, Kunming issued a 5G basic network construction plan and a 5G industry development plan to accelerate the pace of 5G commercialization.
According to the Bureau of Industry and Information Technology of Kunming, the three major telecommunications companies, including China Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom, have already built about 1,200 5G base stations in Kunming at present.
Kunming is actively exploring 5G application scenarios and launching demonstration applications. At present, it has carried out demonstration applications such as 5G-based live broadcast of scenic spots, water quality monitoring, face recognition, and high definition drone video.
Kunming is expected to coordinate the forces of all parties and promote an in-depth integration of information technology and urban development. (Edited by Zhang Yuan with Xinhua Silk Road, zhangyuan11@xinhua.org)
