InfoQuest (April 02, 2020) - Mr. Raphiphat Chantarasrivong, secretary-general of the Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE), noted that OAE and Thai Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives (MOAC) are working together with other departments, such as provincial ministries of agriculture and cooperatives, provincial agriculture offices, provincial fisheries departments, and provincial animal husbandry departments to gather farm produce information of all provinces. Based on farm produce output information from survey, each province can formulate their own policies to promote efficient management of farm produce, and allocate farm produce precisely and comprehensively to local people, so as to make people believe that Thailand has enough food for consumption and prevent unnecessary hoarding caused by panic.
The monitoring works of OAE and other relevant departments will make people feel reassured that Thailand's farm produce and grain storage volume is capable of meeting domestic demand and maintaining previous export capacity. An analysis on Thailand's major agricultural exports finds that currently durian and mangosteen are appearing in market and being exported to overseas market, especially China, where the epidemic has been curbed.
Besides, the export of rice and instant food has been boosted by foreign demand. During the first two months of 2020 (January-February), Thailand has exported 179.011 billion baht of farm produce to world market, mostly meat and processed seafood, rice, sugar, instant food and fruits. The major market was ASEAN, with export volume of 46.638 billion baht, followed by Chinese market, 29.055 billion baht, and then Japan and US.
Ms. Tatsanee Muangkaew, deputy secretary-general of OAE, added that as a global epidemic, COVID-19 has prompted many countries to close down land borders and stop land and air passenger and cargo transportation. As a result, the import and export of farm produce via land and air routes have reduced and many products are transported via ships.
All departments of MOAC will work together to promote the production of farm produce meeting international standards and examine the quality of Thai farm produce, aiming to maintain the confidence of international market and enhance the amount and value of Thai agricultural exports, and benefit Thai enterprises, farmers and the whole country.
