The optics and electronics group Carl Zeiss has completed the acquisition of the software provider Saxonia Systems AG. Founded in 1990 in Dresden, the company will support Zeiss with their digital projects under the new name Carl Zeiss Digital Innovation and play a leading role in innovation, the Zeiss group announced on Monday at its headquarters in Oberkochen.
The transaction has been approved by Germany’s Federal Cartel Office, the company said, adding that the parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.
Zeiss acquired its first shares in Saxonia Systems in September 2018. All 235 permanent employees will continue to be employed. The annual turnover of the Dresden-based company has so far been estimated at approximately 32 million euros.
Zeiss' Jena-based medical technology division has already been working with Saxonia for 10 years. Jena is the second-largest location of the Baden-Württemberg-based group with, among others, the listed Zeiss Meditec AG and several other subsidiaries.
Zeiss also intends to establish a second innovation hub at its Dresden site in order to strengthen networking with local research institutions and academia, in particular with the Technical University of Dresden.
Zeiss employs more than 2,300 people in Jena - the company's founding location. A new Zeiss Campus is currently being built in the industrial city at a cost of around 300 million euros. All Jena subsidiaries are to have their headquarters there in the future.
