Germany's construction sector saw continued strong growth over 2019, powered by a booming property market in many of the bigger cities, to post its seventh year in positive territory, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reported.
Growth in the sector came in at 5.1 per cent on the year, with all subdivisions showing positive growth, Destatis reported on Monday on the basis of preliminary figures.
The number of workers employed by the sector rose by 1.9 per cent on the year.
Strong demand for both houses and apartment blocks, as well as state investment in roads, have for years contributed to growth.
Higher prices for construction services also helped boost the turnover figures.
In February, the main German construction sector association put total turnover for 2019 at 135 billion euros (154 billion dollars). The association is predicting nominal growth of 5.5 per cent on the year for 2020.
Destatis bases its figures on companies employing at least 20 people. The sector is made up of construction work on buildings, roads, rail, cables and pipelines.
