Thailand sets up working groups to help Anti-Fake News Center win public recognition

February 18, 2020

Abstract : Mr. Puttipong Punnakanta, minister of the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, revealed that two working groups are proposed at the 1/2020 committee meeting to coordinate and address fake news issues threatening the security of people's lives and property, held on February 14.

InfoQuest (February 17, 2020) -- Mr. Puttipong Punnakanta, minister of the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, revealed that two working groups are proposed at the 1/2020 committee meeting to coordinate and address fake news issues threatening the security of people's lives and property, held on February 14.

One working group will harness academic knowledge to disseminate accurate information. It will be chaired by Mr. Wasan Paileeklee, and joined by senior scholars to provide academic knowledge and enhance the public's ability to identify fake news.

Another working group will be responsible for presenting fake news analysis and screening to the Anti-Fake News Center. It will be led by Digital Economy and Society Deputy Permanent Secretary Puchapong Nodthaisong, with the head of the Center as his deputy and representatives from Thai Media Fund, Sure and Share Center, Real News Thailand, Technology Crime Suppression Division and Royal Thai Police as other group members.

This move aims to ensure that the Center remains neutral in work, complies with international standards, get recognized by the public and is able to disseminate accurate and authentic news and information to the public.

Specifically, news analysis and screening are meant to analyze and investigate likely false news, and then the confirmed fake news will be presented to the Center. The working groups should also brief Mr. Puttipong on their work and perform other assigned tasks.

In addition, at the meeting, the achievements the Center has realized in dealing with news reports related to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) were reported. As of February 13, a total of 52 pieces of news had been handled, of which 41 were identified as fake news, 10 were real and 1 was distorted.

The meeting also considered the appointment of representatives to complain to relevant authorities if it turns out that government departments and agencies are aggrieved parties or those involved in fake news posted on social media and the Internet. The appointment is meant to press ahead work according to the resolution to support the Center adopted by the cabinet meeting on January 28, 2020. The resolution calls on relevant government departments and agencies to cooperate with the Center to address the issue of publishing and disseminating false and distorted news reports on social media and the Internet. At present, the spread of fake news is becoming more and more serious, hindering the public from obtaining real information and establishing correct understanding. Some news reports even damage the country's image.

The cabinet resolution includes such measures as having the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society inform various departments of the resolution and appointing representatives responsible for making complaints to relevant departments in cases where investigations find that government departments and agencies are victims or those involved in fake news posted on social media and the Internet.
