InfoQuest, (February 13, 2020) -- Airports of Thailand (AOT) revealed that yesterday (February 3), the board meeting presided over by Chairman Mr. Prasong Poonthanes passed a measure for better flight schedule management of six airports, including Suvarnabhumi Airport, Don Mueang International Airport, Phuket International Airport, Chiang Mai International Airport, Hat Yai International Airport, and Mae Fah Luang – Chiang Rai International Airport. Currently, due to flight density limit, airlines cannot apply for extra flights.
Especially in Suvarnabhumi Airport and Don Mueang International Airport, though some airlines have asked to cancel flights for fear of 2019-nCoV, there are still other airlines that cannot offer extra flights to meet current demand. Because of the marketing strategy of most airlines with allocated airline timetables, in sometimes, the canceling of flights is delayed.
As a result, other airlines that are interested in picking up the slack cannot apply for permit and launch marketing in a timely manner. For this purpose, it was decided that the six airports of AOT shall improve airline timetable management to stimulate tourism. The program will start on February 5, 2020 and end on March 26, 2022.
Awards will be offered to airlines that cancel flights at least 30 days in advance according to flight date in flight timetable. Those airlines are encouraged to return unused flight timetables timely to make other airlines with demands to apply for flights and pick up the slack timely.
Awards will be offered to airlines of original flight timetables at a standard of 200 baht per passenger in extra outbound flights; a 50 percent discount is offered for the landing fee of extra flights and charter flights. For airlines that cancel flights to gain awards, the prerequisite is that their canceled flights are picked up by other airlines. The measure will end on the last day of off-season flight timetables in 2022, or April 2022.
AOT believes that the measure can help stimulate tourism industry and boost aviation industry during the outbreak of 2019-nCoV; help enhance the efficiency of flight management and bring more benefits to passengers; and can also create opportunities for other interested airlines to offer extra flights, and deliver maximum benefits though better airport resources management.
