DEB and oil businesses offers discounts for diesel engine oil replacement to alleviate PM 2.5 issues

February 13, 2020

Abstract : Department of Energy Business of Thailand (DEB), revealed that DEB in conjunction with six oil trading companies issued an announcement to hold promotions of offering discounts for car maintenance services from today until February 29, 2020, to alleviate PM 2.5 issues.

InfoQuest, (February 13, 2020) -- Ms. Nanthika Thangsupanich, director of the Department of Energy Business of Thailand (DEB), revealed that DEB in conjunction with six oil trading companies issued an announcement to hold promotions of offering discounts for car maintenance services from today until February 29, 2020, to alleviate PM 2.5 issues.

These companies include PTT Oil and Retail Business Company Limited, Bangchak Corporation Public Company Limited (BCP), Esso Public Company Limited (ESSO), PTG Energy Public Company Limited (PTG), Shell Company of Thailand Limited and Caltex, a subsidiary of Chevron (Thailand) Limited.

These companies will provide discounts of up to 50 percent for diesel engine oil replacement. There are also other promotional activities, such as automobile maintenance services, oil filter, air filter and AC filter replacement. Oil replacement will make engine cleaner, helping reduce fine particles. Apparently, each oil company will launch different promotions.

"PM 2.5 issues due to inadequate combustion of diesel engines, especially in older cars, have had an impact on public health. DEB has asked oil trading companies to remain cooperative in promotional activities for oil and oil filter replacement to cut exhaust which is the main cause of PM 2.5," said Ms. Nanthika.

Ms. Nanthika also mentioned that the Ministry of Energy (MOE) is promoting the use of B10 diesel as test results show that it can reduce PM 2.5 emissions by about 13 percent. In addition, fuels up to Euro 5 standards can help reduce fine particles. MOE has already all refineries to produce fuels up to Euro 5 standards by 2024. But admittedly, the ministry cannot promote refineries to accelerate production of fuels up to Euro 5 standards because refinery upgrading requires a lot of investment. At the moment, Thai refineries have made an all-out effort to speed up upgrading.
