German energy group RWE is increasing its presence on the American electricity market. In Texas, a solar park with a capacity of 100 megawatts has now gone into commercial operation, the Essen-based company announced on Monday. The plant, for which 350,000 photovoltaic modules were installed on an area the size of 550 soccer fields, lays the foundation for RWE's growing solar business in North America, said the head of RWE's renewable energy division, Anja-Isabel Dotzenrath. RWE has signed a long-term power supply contract for energy production at the solar park.
RWE, which has traditionally been a lignite-based power company, now wants to transform itself into a producer of green energy. To this end, the company is currently investing primarily in projects abroad. For example, a solar power plant with a capacity of almost 200 megawatts is under construction in the US state of Georgia. The plant is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2021.
