The long march of Chinese companies in Italy, according to Roland Berger

October 23, 2019

Abstract : It's the rhythm that counts. Chinese companies in the Old Continent play an increasingly decisive role in local economies, they are increasing and producing.

MILAN, Oct. 21 (Class Editori) – It's the rhythm that counts. Chinese companies in the Old Continent play an increasingly decisive role in local economies, they are increasing and producing. This is the picture from the latest report by Roland Berger, in collaboration with the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in the European Union.

On the absolute numbers China is still lagging behind its American and Japanese competitors. If instead we look at the percentages of growth, the Chinese groups are doing better than their competitors. Looking at the statistics, Chinese companies have registered expansion rates of 10%, with peaks of 25% in German territory. In Italy data show a constant growth (+19%), against 3% of the US companies and 10% of the Japanese companies.

Even the value of production maintains a faster pace than its competitors. In Italy it averaged +46% compared to 3% US and 15% of the Japanese. Even in this case, however, China is still distant from the absolute numbers.

Looking at the big picture, although investments have fallen over the last two years, Chinese companies in the EU have contributed to the growth and development of some key sectors. At the end of 2018, for example, the overseas groups had already made over 3100 direct investments in companies in all 28 EU countries, creating around 250,000 jobs. Several realities have established their own research and development centers or factories in the EU.

The report gives the example of Huawei which has built at least 23 research and development centers in 14 countries, where 2,383 employees are employed and over 75 million euros (82.9 million dollars) are invested. Looking at Italy, the map includes the research and development center of the Baic car manufacturer in Turin, where is based also the competitor Jac. Or the 5G development research center opened by ZTE in L'Aquila.

The report therefore clamis about the "increasingly stringent foreign investment policies" implemented by the European Union. Italy itself is approving the new regulation on the Golden Power, which extends to 5G the special powers of the government to put vetoes and conditions on the supplies concerning strategic networks. Among the challenges for Chinese companies, Roland Berger therefore notes limited access to some key sectors due to the growing censorship of foreign investments by the EU and the restrictions on the development of some Chinese companies caused by misunderstandings arising from public opinion and the limited participation in the definition of European standards".
