Interview: China on fast track to green future

August 29, 2019

Abstract : China is on fast track in its transition to a green economy as the country is taking concrete and innovative steps to that end, according to an environmental expert.

BEIJING, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- China is on fast track in its transition to a green economy as the country is taking concrete and innovative steps to that end, according to an environmental expert.

China has become the world's most inspiring market in terms of energy reforms and development approach innovations, Zou Ji, CEO and president of Energy Foundation China, told Xinhua in an interview.

Transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy is accelerating in China, which enjoys the biggest installed capacity of solar and wind energy worldwide, and technology advancements are driving production costs lower and energy efficiency higher, according to Zou.

"Driving northwest from Beijing to Hebei, you will see a lot of wind turbines. Walking on the streets of Shenzhen, you will find that all the taxis and buses are electric vehicles. These were unseen and unimaginable a decade ago," Zou said.

He added China has been fully aware of the strategic importance of green growth, with a string of laws, policies and initiatives to push for cleaner air, water and soil.

Zou said he is impressed that the country has made pollution prevention and control as one of "the three tough battles" since 2017, and that China is playing a leading role in promoting and implementing the Paris Agreement on climate change.

China vowed to halt the rise in carbon dioxide emissions by around 2030, a goal that Zou estimated could be met earlier with a lower-than-expected peak.

As a charitable organization dedicated to China's sustainable energy development, the foundation has been supporting the country's green initiatives for 20 years, funding over 2,700 projects with total amount of over 300 million dollars by the end of 2018.

China's long-term strategy for decarbonization, Belt and Road Initiative, as well as international dialogues and cooperation are among the organization's future work priorities, according to the CEO.
