TAIYUAN, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- An international liquor competition opened Friday in the city of Fenyang, north China's Shanxi Province, to promote cooperation and exchanges in alcoholic drinks.
The 2019 Spirits Selection by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles (CMB) has attracted 1,748 samples from 59 countries and regions, which are expected to be judged by 104 professionals.
CMB president Baudouin Havaux said at the opening ceremony that baijiu, a Chinese distilled liquor, accounts for 35 percent of the world's total spirits output. With baijiu representing 30 percent of submissions, this year's competition provides an important opportunity to know different types of baijiu.
Established in 1999, the competition is held in different countries and regions, and has become an international event rewarding spirits from across the globe.
As one of the world's top 10 spirit producing areas, Fenyang has stepped up its development of the baijiu industry in recent years.
In 2018, the city saw the value of its baijiu output reach 11.42 billion yuan (1.61 billion U.S. dollars). Tax revenue from the baijiu sector accounted for 72.8 percent of the city's total.
