Germany's Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner rejects a ban on plastic bags. "Only a ban, as the Greens want it, without having an alternative," is something that the citizens are not satisfied with, the deputy leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) said on Monday in Berlin before committee meetings of her party. Under the leadership of her department, alternatives to plastic bags made from renewable raw materials are already being developed. It‘s about offering alternatives through innovations, she said.
Environment Minister Svenja Schulze, a member of the Social Democrats (SPD), had announced at the weekend that she wanted to implement a ban on plastic bags. The government is currently working on a legal regulation. At the end of July Markus Söder, Bavarian premier and leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU), had promised an initiative in the Bundesrat, the upper chamber of parliament, for a Germany-wide ban on plastic bags.
