Half of Germans are expecting the economy of the country to worsen in the coming years, a new survey commissioned by broadcasters RTL and n-tv has found.
Only 14 per cent of Germans expect an economic upturn in the next few years, and 34 per cent expect things to stay the same, the survey published on Monday said.
The report found there were significant differences between German states, with residents in Saxony and Thuringia expecting the most positive results.
In Saxony, 30 per cent of participants said they expected the economic situation in their state to improve in the coming years, with 26 per cent expecting a downturn.
In Thuringia, 29 per cent estimate a positive economic development.
In the rest of the country expectations for the future were less optimistic. In the Saarland region, 64 per cent of participants said they thought the economic situation would worsen, with similar results measured across the rest of the country.
The survey was conducted between June 25 and July 11, with 500 participants from each state, except Bremen, which was not included in the survey.
