Thai Ministry of Commerce urges manufacturers to secure China's booming second-tier cities market

July 22, 2019

Abstract : Last month, TMall Global launched a shopping spree for global imports.

InfoQuest (July 19, 2019) - Last month, TMall Global launched a shopping spree for global imports. The total transaction volume increased by more than 10 times, the number of users increased eightfold in the first hour after the spree began, and orders from consumers in second-tier cities rose 1,170 percent, according to Director Miss. Suppara Seakacharn from the Office of Commercial Affairs, Royal Thai Embassy to Guangzhou, China, under the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), Ministry of Commerce.

Based on the analysis of the top ten cities with the highest growth, it was found that six were second-tier cities. Jiangyang, Shantou and Jiangmen in Guangdong Province ranked the top three, while the remaining three places were secured by Hengyang in Hunan Province, Zhuhai in Guangdong Province and Linzhou in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. However, metropolis Shanghai came in fourth. Jiaxing, Taizhou and Ningbo in Zhejiang Province ranked sixth to eighth respectively.

Major cities such as Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hangzhou remained cities where imports ranked first in China, but consumption growth became weak, falling behind the 20th among cities with the highest growth.

Miss. Suppara noted that the price-off promotions held by the TMall Global this year showed that purchasing power of consumers in the second-tier cities is climbing. Products that saw growth included health-care products and traditional body care products such as ginseng and edible bird's nest, household and living supplies such as stew-pans and frying pans, as well as pet feed, such as cat food and dog food.

"According to the statistics from the TMall Global, consumers in China's second-tier cities are spending more on imported goods. Thus Thai enterprises should take the chance to provide products catering for the new market, especially health-care products, household and living items and pet feed. Second-tier cities are new markets that can help increase Thailand's exports and generate revenue for Thai enterprises, said Miss. Suppara.

TMall Global now sells imported products from 77 countries and regions. More than 4,000 products and more than 20,000 foreign brands can be found on this online platform. This booming situation was due to that cross-border e-commerce policy in China was further relaxed, with 15 new pilot bonded cities. Now there are 37 bonded cities in total, including new pilot cities in remote areas such as Hohhot City in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and Lanzhou City. This layout facilitated the consumption growth of imports in the second-tier cities.
