Chinese-built power transmission line boosts access to green energy in Kenya: official

Abstract : A Chinese-built electricity transmission line in Kenya that connects northern region to Kenya's national grid will boost access to green energy, a government official said on Thursday.

NAIROBI, July 18 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese-built electricity transmission line in Kenya that connects northern region to Kenya's national grid will boost access to green energy, a government official said on Thursday.

Fernandes Barasa, managing director of Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO), told journalists in Nairobi that the 435-km Loiyangalani-Suswa transmission line was built by a consortium of NARI Group Corporation and PowerChina Guizhou Engineering Co., Ltd. at a cost of 28 billion Kenyan shillings (271 million U.S. dollars).

The Loiyangalani-Suswa power transmission line was completed in 2018.and other wind farms in the Rift Valley and wind farms in northern Kenya," Barasa said.

"The purpose of the electricity line is to evacuate power from the 310 MW Lake Turkana wind power plant as well as future-generation plants along the area it traverses which will comprise of solar, geothermal

He added that the transmission infrastructure is rated 1,200 MW and targets to increase electricity supply and reduce power cost.
