The Chinese manufacturer CATL intends to start the construction of its planned battery cell factory for electric cars near Erfurt this autumn. The ground-breaking ceremony is likely to take place in mid or late September after the relevant environmental permits have been granted, Matthias Zentgraf, president of CATL Europe, said on Thursday at the Automotive Thuringia industry conference.
Over the next five years, the Chinese group plans to invest 1.8 billion euros in the state of Thuringia in response to growing market demand. Initially, the company had only envisaged investing 240 million euros. The factory is expected to employ 2,000 people in the medium term.
