Chinese electric automaker Nio recalls 4,803 vehicles

June 28, 2019

Abstract : Chinese electric vehicle maker Nio Inc. will recall 4,803 automobiles from the Chinese market starting Thursday, according to the country's top quality watchdog.

BEIJING, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese electric vehicle maker Nio Inc. will recall 4,803 automobiles from the Chinese market starting Thursday, according to the country's top quality watchdog.

The recall involves 4,803 NIO ES8 crossovers with battery boxes manufactured between April 2 and Oct. 19, 2018, according to a statement by the State Administration for Market Regulation.

The defective battery boxes carrying the NEV-P50 module might lead to fires in extreme cases, posing safety risks. The battery supplier CATL said the module was exclusively customized for the 4,803 recalled vehicles.

The automaker promised to replace the defective parts of all affected vehicles free of charge. The replacement will be completed in two months. Nio also promised to compensate for the customers' property damage caused by the battery fire.

China ordered carmakers to conduct checks on electric vehicles earlier this month after some made by Tesla Inc. and Nio Inc. caught on fire.

Companies need to check for potential safety hazards with battery boxes, waterproof protection in vehicles, high-voltage wiring harnesses, as well as onboard charging devices, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said in an online statement. Automakers need to submit their findings by the end of October.
