MILAN, Apr 26 (Class Editori) – Ferrovie dello Stato plays ahead of Chinese purpose to tune the infrastructural development along the New Silk Road in to more environmentally sustainable needs. The Italian Railways service seized the opportunity offered by the Italian Ministry of Economy through a meeting with Danny Alexander, the Vice President of the AIIB – the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank – to introduce its initiatives for integrated and sustainable mobility to Beijing’s multilateral institution. For the occasion, the transport group had its Senior Vice President for FS International business development, Giovanni Rocca, as its spokesperson.
During the meeting, the Italian group could bring to light its eco-friendly strategies, built on initiatives like the Treno Verde (the Green Train) and the Green Hub – as well as on green bonds worth 600 million euro, placed last December 2017.
Over the last year, the AIIB pushed for sustainability, and is now accredited according to the best international standards. Last January, the institute’s management board – of which Italy own a 2.7% share – gave its approval to a 500-million-dollar bond investment for the development of green projects in the energy, transport and communication sectors.
“If only a small fraction of the thousand billion dollars managed by institutional investors were to be injected in infrastructural projects, this could play as the catalyst for potential development in Asian emerging countries,” had explained Dong-ik Lee, Director General for Investment Operations.
For its part, FS is not only Italy’s main investment promoter, but is also a relevant international player in the engineering, infrastructure and transport sectors – launching its FS International unit in June 2016 to serve this purpose. The unit’s operations span broad and wide, reaching over 60 countries, most of which are involved in the Belt & Road Initiative.
As for the countries discussed about during the latest Italy-China Business Forum on third market cooperation, last year FS signed a MoU with the Azeri Railway services for laying the foundations of the development of cooperation strategies.
In Kazakhstan, the Italian transport group is active as a sub-contractor in some tenders for the realization of the light-rail transport line in Almaty. As for Egypt, FS has two commissions open through Italferr: the first one involves direction of updating works for signaling systems along two railway corridors – the Benha-Zagazig-El Ismailia-Port Said, and the Zagazig-Abu Kebir ones; the second interests signaling system migration along some sections of the Alessandria-Cairo-Asyut railway corridor.
