The aging exhibition center in Erfurt is to be renovated, an investment worth millions of euros. The Economics Ministry in the eastern state of Thuringia announced on Wednesday that almost 28 million euros had been earmarked for the project up to 2023. The money will be used to modernize the foyer and halls, develop new parking concepts, and upgrade the technical infrastructure. The mass-circulation newspaper "Bild" had been the first to report on the investment program.
Last year, around 648,000 people visited trade fairs, exhibitions, concerts and conferences at Thuringia's largest trade fair venue. That makes the exhibition center an important economic factor for the region, said the state’s Economics Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee, a member of the Social Democrats.
A large part of the earmarked investment, 12.4 million euros, will be released in the coming year. The plans for the initial phase include the modernization of the rostrum in Hall 1 and the installation of a cooling system to be used during the summer months.
