Thai Ministry of Commerce cooperates with SMEs to expand market in Myanmar

April 15, 2019

Abstract : Mr. Adul Chotinisakorn, director general of the Department of Foreign Trade (DFT) of Thai Ministry of Commerce, revealed that DFT will visit Myanmar together with the delegation of SMEs from border provinces.

InfoQuest (April 13, 2019) -- Mr. Adul Chotinisakorn, director general of the Department of Foreign Trade (DFT) of Thai Ministry of Commerce, revealed that DFT will visit Myanmar together with the delegation of SMEs from border provinces.

They seek to identify business partners through fair, investigate Myanmar's major retail and wholesale markets, and attend an activity hosted by the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) in Pegu City, with the aim to create trade and investment opportunities for Thai SMEs and start-ups and enable them to expand marketing channels in Myanmar.

"29 SMEs of three industries from Thai border provinces will come to Myanmar, which will offer products like consumer goods, home decoration, and health and beauty products. Among the 50-plus enterprises that attended the fair, K One Food Co., Ltd., a business of consumer goods, secured an order worth over 3 million baht on spot," said Mr. Adul.

Besides, 14 enterprises from Myanmar were willing to purchase Thai products and invest in Thai enterprises. For instance, three enterprises from Myanmar were in the mood to import the products of Techno-Bird Co., Ltd., a producer of bird equipment for buildings and disinfector; many were interested in the herbal cosmetics of Sense Beauty Co., Ltd. Some intended to import the rubber products of 42 Natural Rubber Co., Ltd. and put them to furniture markets and hospitals in Myanmar. Some others intended to establish a joint venture with 4 U Nature (Thailand) Limited Partnership and co-sell products.

Another highlight is a "Knock Door" activity for large importers engaging in modern trade. Myanmar Best Food & Beverage Co. Ltd., Dagon Win Win, and leading department store Citymart were interested in Thai products. At these activities, Thai enterprises gained deeper information about trading channels, which will be used to formulate export strategy. They also exchanged ideas and established sound relations with these enterprises.

"Thanks to similar consumption culture, most Myanmar people like Thai consumer goods and trust the quality. The most popular Thai products include energy drink, juice, and cosmetics," added the director general of DFT.

Standing on a strategic position connecting China and India, Myanmar holds huge potential in trade and investment. For sustainable bilateral trade, Thai government has all along issued policies to boost trade and investment cooperation with Myanmar.

In the past, DITP had taken charge of border trade and investment cooperation with neighboring countries. For common economic growth of Thailand and Myanmar, it had organized investment and trade delegations to Myanmar, and established Thailand-Myanmar entrepreneur liaison network, thus scoring remarkable results in expanding trade and investment.
