Germany is doing much better on digitalisation when compared internationally than people in the country think, according to a new study.
Only around a quarter of the more than 5,000 people asked in Germany ranked the country in the stable mid-range, while nearly 40 per cent saw it in the lower third and almost a quarter placed it in the bottom group.
In fact, Germany is clearly among the front runners in a ranking of 118 countries prepared by the networking company Cisco and the market research firm Gartner. Only the United States, Switzerland, Singapore, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom scored higher.
To make the international comparison, the study used standardised data, for instance from the United Nations, the World Bank or the World Economic Forum.
The ranking was established based on seven categories, including technology infrastructure, the skilled labour and training situation, business and government investments, and overall standard of living.
Germany scored particularly well on living standards and overall economic conditions, Cisco said on Thursday. When it comes to the start-up environment and technology infrastructure, the country is in the middle of the range.
The states of Baden-Wuerttemberg, Bavaria, Berlin and Hamburg attained the highest scores in the Cisco rating. They had above-average results for instance in the category of skilled labour development.
While Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg scored particularly well on living and economic standards, Hamburg and Berlin were in the lead when it came to their start-up environment.
