A research campus for automated and digitised rail transport in the town of Annaberg-Buchholz and nine other projects with links to the state of Saxony can look forward to millions of euros in support from the German government.
The Ministry of Education and Research announced Wednesday that the initiatives are among 20 alliances in eastern Germany that have been selected to receive funds as part of the programme "WIR! - Wandel durch Innovation in der Region" (We! - Change through innovation in the region).
A total of 200 million euros (228 million dollars) in federal funding is available under the programme. Each project can receive up to 15 million euros over five years. The exact individual amounts being awarded were not yet disclosed.
The Smart Rail Connectivity Campus, where 112 business and science partners led by the Chemnitz University of Technology are researching the future of railway technology, was selected along with the other initiatives by a seven-member jury.
More than 100 bids were submitted in total and were then whittled down to 32 as part of an initial selection process.
"The projects contribute significantly to advancing extremely innovative initiatives with objectives that are highly relevant socially and economically, as well as further intensifying the knowledge and technology transfer from TU Chemnitz to the region," said university president Gerd Strohmeier.
The university is also involved in the SmartERZ project, which is meant to develop new technologies, products and business models for a structural change in the Ore Mountains region.
