The German chemical giant BASF plans to expand its Schwarzheide production site. The company foresees investments worth hundreds of millions of euros, its management announced on Wednesday in Schwarzheide, a town in the district of Oberspreewald-Lausitz.
Last year, BASF invested 148 million euros (167 million dollars) in the maintenance and expansion of the manufacturing facilities and the modernisation of infrastructure. The company is also looking into entering the battery market.
Sustained growth for the Schwarzheide site is not an empty promise, said chief executive Juergen Fuchs. In early February, the company and the Minister President of the state of Brandenburg, DietmarWoidke (SPD), had signed a joint statement in Ludwigshafen in which BASF pledged to expand the site, while the state promised support.
