The Volkswagen Group intends to roll out considerably more electric models than initially planned. By 2028, almost 70 new electric cars are supposed to go on sale, the German carmaker announced on Tuesday in Wolfsburg. VW had previously spoken of 50 new models.
In the coming decade, VW is thus planning to build 22 million electric cars on its own platforms, instead of the previously expected 15 million.
"In order to shoulder the investments needed for the electric offensive, we must make further improvements in efficiency and performance in all areas," said VW chief executive Herbert Diess.
Volkswagen plans to invest 44 billion euros (50 billion dollars) over the next five years in new technology such as electric engines, autonomous driving and digitalisation.
In the next decade, stricter rules on the emission of environmentally harmful carbon dioxide will come into effect in the European Union. This is spurring car manufacturers to further develop e-mobility in order to avoid fines.
