March 03, 2017

Abstract : Italy is in a phase of growth and recovery but it needs to be accompanied by Europe, Italian prime minister Paolo Gentiloni said on Thursday at the end of a meeting in Rome with Joseph Muscat, prime minister of Malta, current holder of the EU Presidency.

ROME, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Italy is in a phase of growth and recovery but it needs to be accompanied by Europe, Italian prime minister Paolo Gentiloni said on Thursday at the end of a meeting in Rome with Joseph Muscat, prime minister of Malta, current holder of the EU Presidency.

"Italy is in a phase of growth and recovery also in terms of employment and jobs, and yet we know that this growth, this new employment capacity are limited and gradual, they need to be accompanied,"Gentiloni said during a joint press conference.

" So we think about a Europe that is from this point of view the framework needed to help this growth, to accompany this ability to create new jobs that our country finally is showing, thanks to the work done in recent years," he said.

The two prime ministers discussed the celebrations to be held on March 25 in Rome to mark the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome.

The Treaties of Rome, signed on March 25, 1957, were the Treaty establishing the European Economic Community and the Treaty establishing the European Atomic Energy Community. They were signed by the six founding Member States: Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and the Federal Germany.

Gentiloni also said that the declaration they are working on for this occasion will outline the results achieved by European Union and its prospects over the next 10 years.

"It will be a very important occasion and we have been working together for weeks to give a sign of relaunch at a time that many call difficult," he said, pointing out there are difficulties and divisions but also potentialities.

According to Gentiloni, he discussed with Muscat issues related to the Middle East, the Mediterranean, immigration and the situation in Libya.

Concerning the recent agreement reached with Libya on migrations, Muscat said "We have for the first time a framework on which we can work about the immigration subject. It is not perfect, but I think it is the most important point that Europe has ever reached in terms of migration and in terms of the control of migration flows from the Central Mediterranean."
