The market for smartphones, apps and telecommunications services in Germany is expected to grow this year by 3 per cent to 34 billion euros, bucking the worldwide trend, the Bitkom digital association said Wednesday.
Data and voice services make up the largest share with 20.3 billion euros. Smartphones alone will generate 10.4 billion euros in sales, an increase of 2.4 per cent from last year, according to Bitkom estimates. The market for smartphone apps should grow by 5 per cent to 1.6 billion euros.
The market in Germany is developing positively, contrary to the worldwide trend, said Bitkom executive committee member and Vodafone Germany CEO Hannes Ametsreiter. While worldwide smartphone sales have declined recently, demand in Germany remains stable.
According to Bitkom, 81 per cent of people over 14 years old in Germany are using a smartphone, with every second person always acquiring the newest model. A Bitkom survey found that 61 per cent have a device that is at most one year old.
