Chinese-Italian cooperation on satellite CSES announced in Vienna. The aim is to confirm the existence of a timely correlation between earthquakes and electromagnetic disturbances into space. The Italian Space Agency (ASI) looks at the opportunities offered by the Chinese space station.

18/02/2019 – Class Editori. Italy and China keep a scientific collaboration in the space sector. In Vienna, during the last meeting of the UN Committee on the peaceful uses of outer space, has been outlined the Chinese-Italian cooperation on the Chinese CSES satellite: the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite.

It's been developed by the CNSA and ASI, the Chinese and Italian space agencies respectively. CSES is investigating on the magnetosphere ions disturbances caused by seismicity and electromagnetic emissions coming from the troposphere, with the aim of confirming the existence of a timely correlation between earthquakes and electromagnetic disturbances into space, explained the Italian Ministry of Foreign, that together with the International cooperation initially co-financed the projects. Italy provided the mission with high energy particle detector (HEPD), and participated to the development of a electric field detector (EFD) up to 5 MHz.

On February 2, 2018 the satellite was launched and the fact was reported also in the Joint Statement on the 9th Meeting of the China-Italy Joint Government Committee released at the end of the meeting last January 24 in Rome. The statement also refers to the Italian particles detector developed under the "Li Madou" project. The project takes its name from the transcription of the first letters of name of Matteo Ricci into the Chinese pinyin. The Jesuit and missionary from Marche that in mid-1500 forged a fruitful bond during the period of Imperial China.

A month ago the government committee meeting served to further promote the relations between the two countries in the space exploration and research. With this in mind, in 2021 the launch of CSES-2 mission could see the Italian participation again. The statement also highlights the "Italy's participation in the Chinese space station through the production of habitable modules and the performance of the relative scientific experiments as a trade-off for China conceding a flight opportunity for Italian astronauts and scientific experiments."

As recommended by the commissioner of the Italian space agency, Piero Benvenuti, during the 2018 Italy-China science, technology and innovation week the new space station: "Could offer great flight opportunities for our astronauts, and also for the experiments and innovative technologies development".

He added that China "is rapidly progressing in the space activity". The successful landing of the Chang'e 4 probe on the far side of the moon last January 3 is a sign of the technological level reached.

The Beijing space program can count on 8 billion dollars of annual resources, second just to the US one. Chongqing already welcomes works on the next goal: a space solar plant operational by 2030.
