Germany's machine manufacturers were feeling the uncertainty of customers due to international trade conflicts at the end of the year 2018.
Orders in December were 8 percent below the level of the same month in 2017, the Mechanical Engineering Industry Association (VDMA) said on Wednesday in Frankfurt.
For the full year, the export-heavy industry recorded an increase of 5 percent in orders year on year adjusted for price increases.
The dynamics shifted increasingly to the domestic business in the course of the year, the VDMA's economic expert Olaf Wortmann said.
"This is a positive development, since orders from abroad were already at a high level," he said.
Among other things, the industry is worried about the trade conflict between the United States and China.
