According to a new study, a large number of small and medium-sized companies in Germany want to create new jobs this year. In the "Mittelstandsbarometer," produced by consulting firm Ernst & Young (EY), 38 percent of the companies stated that they wanted to increase their staff numbers. That’s the highest percentage since 2004, when the data was first collected. At the start of 2018 it was 36 percent. Only 3 percent of all 1,500 companies surveyed said they intended to cut jobs this year.
At the same time, the shortage of skilled workers remains by far the greatest concern for SMEs, according to the study published in Stuttgart on Thursday. Furthermore, the existing bottlenecks are likely to intensify.
