Uganda to commission Chinese constructed power plant -- Uganda's electricity generation agency on Monday said plans are underway to commission the Chinese constructed Isimba Hydropower Plant in the central part of the country along River Nile. Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) said in a statement that current physical progress of the 183 Megawatt Isimba power plant is estimated at 98.5 percent. According UEGCL, the power plant is scheduled to be launched on Jan. 24. Construction of the plant started in 2015, after Uganda secured a loan from China Export Import Bank. Uganda got the loan to address the country's power shortage, which economic experts said was stalling economic development.
China-contracted 3rd ring highway project in Cambodia starts construction -- Construction on the third ring highway project in Phnom Penh, capital city of Cambodia built by Shanghai Construction Group (SCG) kicked off on January 14. With a total length of 47.6 km, the project is scheduled to be completed within 42 months. Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen made remarks at the opening ceremony that Cambodia has built bridges and highways covering thousands of kilometers under the support of Chinese government, which not only broke through Cambodia's domestic transportation network, bu also helped the country connect with the neighboring countries. Wang Wentian, Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia said that the project will boost the economic development of districts along the route, and drive the development of investment and tourism in the capital city.
First Chinese-standard overseas railway sees safe operation for 900 days -- The Abuja-Kaduna railway built by the Nigerian branch of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) has witnessed safe operation for 900 days by January 12, yidaiyilu.gov.cn reported. On October 30, 2006, CCECC signed a contract for a modern double-line railway project from Lagos to Kano with the Ministry of Transport of Negria, with contract value at 8.3 billion U.S. dollars. With a total length of 1,315 km and designed speed at 150 km per hour, it is the first overseas railway project adopting Chinese standard. The Abuja-Kaduna railway is the first section of the railway project. With a total length of 186.5 km, the Abuja-Kaduna railway connects the capital region of Abuja, Niger state, and Kaduna state, relieving the traffic pressure, improving the investment environment, and boosting the coordinated development of regional economic society in Nigeria. According to the statistics, the Abuja-Kaduna railway has carried a total of 1.23 million passengers as of January 11. In 2018, the railway line carried 733,400 passengers, up 128.47 percent from the previous year.
Chinese company completes two power transmission lines in Egypt -- Hubei Engineering Co., Ltd of Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina, 601669.SH) has recently completed the construction of two electric transmission lines in Egypt, according to the company's website. Located in the Delta region in northern Egypt, the two transmission lines have a total length of 174 km, accounting for about one third of the company's power line construction in Egypt. The two electric transmission lines belong to the EETC 500 KV transmission project, which is the Egypt's largest transmission line built by Hubei Engineering Co., Ltd. The implementation of the two transmission lines will further optimize the electric power network composition of Nile Delta region in Egypt, greatly improve the country’s electricity efficiency, and boost the economic and electric grid development of Egypt.
China-Thailand high-speed railway project likely to raise funds from overseas: Thai media -- Thai cabinet has approved its Ministry of Finance to raised about 166.34 billion Thai Baht (about 35.4 billion yuan) of funds from overseas financial institutions for the construction of the China-Thailand high-speed railway project linking Bangkok and Nong Khai in Thailand, according to Bangkok Post. According to the report, 85 percent of loans needed for the project will be sourced from overseas due to lower interest rates, such as the Export-Import Bank of China (China Eximbank) which is willing to offer loans at the interest rate of 2.3 percent, 0.56 percentage point lower than the average interest rate of Thailand's local financial institutions. The first phase of the project, from Bangkok with Nakhon Ratchasima province with total length of 252.5 kilometers, has started construction on December 21, 2017. Once completed, the railway with a maximum speed of 250 km per hour will be the first high-speed railway of Thailand. The second phase of the project will link Nakon Ratchasima with Nong Khai with total length of 350 kilometers, which will be submitted to Thailand cabinet for approval before the election. It is noted that the Thai government will make further study to decide if the loan from China Eximbank are acceptable, and the decision making process will take another three months from now, a Thai official told the reporter from Bangkok Post.
