German Minister of Agriculture Julia Kloeckner is pushing for further digitalisation in the farming sector. The image of the profession is often still a romantic one, the CDU (Christian Democratic Union) politician told dpa.
"Very few people, when condidering such terms as 'drones' or 'autonomous driving,' think about a farm," she said. "But the stable and the field were networked a long time ago."
At the annual Green Week food exhibition in Berlin that opens on Friday, new technologies are a major subject. Among others, there is the question of finding solutions to a more sparing treatment of nature, such as with a more precise usage of fertilizers and weedkillers.
Kloeckner hopes young IT companies will get involved in the farming sector. "Anyone who wants, as a founder, to be application-relevant is needed in the digitalisation of agriculture," she said. The German Farmers Association is urging a comprehensive expansion of high-speed internet reaching every village as a prerequisite for such an effort. Kloeckner's comments come as she was set Tuesday to discuss digitalisation at an event of the IT association Bitkom.
