German automotive supplier Continental has received a multi-million-euro order from the electric car manufacturer Sono Motors. It will build the electric drive unit for the Sion car, which will go into series production in 2019, Sono Motors announced Thursday.
The company did not disclose the order's value and Continental also declined to comment. But dpa sources say it amounts to hundreds of millions of euros over the life cycle of the electric car.
In addition to the engine, Continental will supply the power electronics and the transmission as part of the drive unit. The Sion is designed to have a range of about 250 kilometres.
Earlier this year, Sono Motors had already announced a partnership with the automotive supplier ElringKlinger for the battery development and production. Some 8,800 pre-orders have so far been made for the Sion.
Sono Motors is a start-up that was established in 2016. The battery of the Sion is meant to be charged both through the power grid and solar cells on the car's body.
