Germany is the European champion when it comes to electricity production from solar energy - even far ahead of such Mediterranean countries as Italy and Spain. So far this year, German solar power plants had delivered 38.1 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, the International Economic Forum for Regenerative Energy (IWR) reported Monday in Muenster.
Second place on the list of solar power producers was Italy at 15.6 billion kilowatt-hours, followed by Spain at 10.7 billion. The German Solar Industry Federation had reported a few months ago that Germany's solar energy production would set a new record in 2018.
In Europe as a whole, so far some 100 billion kilowatt-hours of solar-derived electricity had been produced. By the end of the year, the IWR said, the total production could reach 113 billion kilowatt-hours, up by 9 billion from 2017. The IWR figures were compiled from data provided by European electric transmission network operators.
