German manufacturers paid 3.3 billion euros (3.9 billion dollars) towards climate protection in 2016, according to data released on Wednesday.
This accounts for some 10.5 per cent of the 31.8 billion euros that they paid in total towards helping the environment, the federal statistics agency Destasis said.
About half of the money spent on reducing their impact on the environment went to waste disposal services, in some cases bespoke waste services.
When it comes to climate change mitigation, the costs were incurred principally by using renewable energy, meeting increased energy efficiency standards and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the report said.
