Chinese railway engineering firms hand over 4 bridges to Laos -- Chinese engineering companies, which are building China-Laos railway in northern Laos, have handed over four bridges to the Lao government. A handing-over ceremony was held on Sept. 26 in Lao Ministry of Public Works and Transport in capital Vientiane. Li Bingxuan, director general of the Laos-China Railway Company, the China-Laos joint venture in charge of the construction and operation of China-Laos railway, briefed the construction and completion of the four bridges in Attapeu Province in southern Laos, and handed over them to the Laos side. In less than 50 days, the CREC2 and Sinohydro Bureau 10 under China Power, with the guidance from the Laos-China Railway Company, completed the construction of four brand new bridges in southern Laos' flooded Attapeu.

Nepal says to discuss joint development of hydro projects with China -- The first meeting of the Nepal-China joint steering committee (JSC) is set to be held here later this month to discuss joint development of hydropower projects, according to a Nepali official. "One of the agenda we have set for the meeting is joint venture development of hydropower projects," Dinesh Ghimire, joint secretary at the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation (MoEWRI) told Xinhua. According to officials at the MoEWRI, Nepal will seek China's opinion on a number of projects that the country had forwarded for potential development under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Chinese firm signs EPC contract to build 300MW hydropower station in Indonesia -- China Gezhouba Group Investment Holding Co., Ltd. (CGGC) and Indonesia’s PT. Lentera Damar Amerta recently signed an EPC contract for a 300MW hydropower station project in Indonesia. Located in Central Sulawesi Province in Indonesia, the power station is designed with 300 MW installed capacity and an annual average generating capacity of 16 billion kwh. The project mainly includes a barrage, water diversion system, switch station and houses for power generating.

Chinese contractor drills longest railway tunnel in East Africa -- China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) has drilled the longest railway tunnel in East Africa, the company said on Sept. 24. The tunnel is part of phase 2A of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) that runs from the Kenyan Capital city of Nairobi to Naivasha town. The Phase 2A which extends for about 120 km is set to be completed in 2019. The 4.5 km Ngong tunnel has been designed as a single-track railway tunnel with a clearance height of nine meters and a width of seven meters. CCCC engineers used the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) of drilling and blasting to build the tunnel and it is the first time that such a method has been used on such a large scale in Kenya.

Pakistan's Karot hydropower dam enters full-swing construction -- Karot hydropower dam, the first hydropower project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), completed the river closure operation on Sept. 25, marking the start of the full-swing construction of this project. The project, listed as one of the prioritized projects under the CPEC, is being developed by Karot Power Company comprising Three Gorges South Asia Investment Limited, a subsidiary of China Three Gorges Corporation, and Associated Technologies of Pakistan. It is the first investment project of the Silk Road Fund. The dam, located in Punjab, Pakistan, is expected to be completed by 2021 with an installed capacity of 720MW. The project is being developed on a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) basis with 5-year construction period and 30-year concession period.

China-Laos railway completes first continuous beam block construction on Mekong River -- The concrete casting for the first block of the Luang Prabang cross-Mekong River super major bridge' continuous beam along the China-Laos Railway was completed on Sept. 17, the Chinese contractor said. Yan Haiyong, CPC party secretary of the China Railway No.8 Engineering Group (CREC-8)'s railway project department, who is in charge of the construction of the two bridges across the Mekong along the China-Laos Railway, said that the Luang Prabang railway bridge with a total length of 1458.9 meters, is a key project of the China-Laos Railway. The first block of the continuous beam has a length of 12 meters and consumes a concrete volume of 266 cubic meters.

China-constructed urban railway in Vietnam on horizon -- Vietnam's first urban railway, constructed by China Railway Sixth Group Co. Ltd, started its trial operation on Sept. 20. The Cat Linh-Ha Dong elevated rail line in Vietnam's Hanoi capital is scheduled to run on a pilot basis for three to six months before commercial operation which is expected to start before lunar new year festival (early February 2019).

Cross-border highway linking China and Vietnam concludes trial run -- The trial run of a highway connecting Kunming in southwest China's Yunnan Province and Haiphong, Vietnam was successfully carried out, marking a new "direct link" era for the two cities, local authorities said. Two coaches and three official vehicles departed from Haiphong on Sept. 17, entering China via the Hekou Port on the China-Vietnam border, continued along the Hekou-Kunming expressway and arrived in Kunming Sept. 18 after a 10-hour drive, covering a distance of about 780 km.

Algeria, China to launch 6-bln-USD mega phosphate plant -- Algeria will cooperate with China in building a phosphate plant worth 6 billion U.S. dollars in the northeast region of Algeria, said Youcef Yousfi, Algerian minister for industry and mines. This project aims at exploiting the rich high-quality phosphate resources in Algeria, which will be produced to fertilizers, ammonia, silicon and other materials used in various economic activities, Yousfi was quoted as saying by state-run radio Channel 1. The project will be completed in partnership between two Algerian companies, namely the energy giant Sonatrach and state-run fertilizer manufacturer Semidal-Manal, and two Chinese companies including CITIC and Wengfu Group, the minister added.
