Businesses based in northern Germany want to benefit from the entrepreneurial spirit and innovative power of California’s Silicon Valley. To this end, the federal states of Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg are opening a liaison office in San Francisco.
"It is simply a matter of opening the door to the most innovative region in the world for us," said Dirk Schrödter, head of the State Chancellery in Schleswig-Holstein and a member of the conservative Christian Democrats (CDU), in a statement.
To attend the office opening on Tuesday, Schrödter travelled with a delegation of around 60 representatives from business and science to San Francisco, a city that has been partnered with Kiel for many years.
According to Thilo Rohlfs, Schleswig-Holstein's State Secretary for Economic Affairs and a member of the liberal Free Democrats, the project is initially limited to three years.
